Final Fantasy 7 remake gameplay trailer brings high definition nostalgia

Square Enix has been talking about the Final Fantasy 7 remake for what feels like decades. During Sony’s State of Play presentation on Thursday, they finally dropped another glimpse at the long in development title.

The trailer, embedded below, is only a very fleeting glimpse of what’s to come. The gameplay is looking mighty slick — and Cloud’s hair is looking incredibly full of hairspray — and that’s really all we know right now.

As sister site Gamespot points out, it appears that most of the trailer revolves around the first bombing mission but in glorious high definition and without the blocky bodies of the original. There’s a brief encounter with the Guard Scorpion — the game’s first boss — and fleeting images of Aeris/Aerith handing Cloud a flower.

‘It was quite short, but hopefully you enjoyed seeing Cloud and Aerith brought back to life with such realistic graphics. And oh my god! Did you notice he was there too…?’ producer Yoshinori Kitase wrote in a blog post, alluding to stylish villain Sephiroth’s brief appearance.

The Final Fantasy VII remake was first announced at E3 2015, but Square Enix have been relatively hush about it since. Still no word whether or not this new version will include the famous bath scene and we didn’t see it at E3 last year, to our dismay, but it looks like Square Enix will give us a little more in 2019.

‘Most of the plans are already in place in the run up to launch, so please bear with us a little longer until we can release more information next month,’ director Tetsuya Nomura said in a note tweeted by the official Final Fantasy account.

He’s presumably referring to the publisher’s E3 press conference, which is scheduled for Monday, June 10 at 6 p.m. PT, since Sony is skipping the show this year.

Sony also announced a remake of the cult classic MediEvil along with a handful of other games.
